Women are trained from childhood on "Ghar Ka sochna" / home management skills including cooking, cleaning and taking care of children. Women are expected to be subservient to their husbands and accept whatever they are told without any argument. While some women are happy with this system, some are not. These women have their own problems but that does not mean that they don't have any solution to them. Kaun is about one such woman who has created a new solution for herself which seems to disturb her husband's family very much. Gyan (Farooque Shaikh) is a liberal man who believes in equality, justice and humanity. He has fallen in love with Shoma (Neena Gupta), daughter of Munshi Hargovind Singh (Anang Desai). Shoma's parents are happy that their daughter has found true love because Gyan fulfills the criteria of a 'suitable boy'. Shoma and Gyan get married. Simultaneously, Basu (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), the elder brother of Gyan, also loves Shoma. But he keeps mum because he does not want to steal his brother's love. All goes well till Gyan and Shoma's daughter, Amisha (Amita Sukhai), is born. Things change now. Gyan and Shoma's marriage life is not as happy as it should be. The reason for this is that Basu loves Shoma but he refuses to take advantage of her as he fears his brother will not accept it. She too has fallen in love with him and she will do anything to convince him that she is his one true love.Kaun was also a huge hit outside India.
